The Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in Columbia, South Carolina, consistently rated as one of America’s best zoos, is happy to announce the June 9, 2016 unveiling of its newest exhibit, Sea Lion Landing. It has added four male sea lions and a male harbor seal to a $12 million saltwater habitat with its estimated 250,000 gallon water exhibit.
The Zoo is already home to over 2,000 magnificent animals and one of the nation’s most beautiful botanical gardens situated on a lush 170-acre site. The Governor’s Cup for South Carolina’s Most Outstanding Tourist Attraction was awarded twice. The Zoo also is part of a breeding plan including more than 70 different species, protects endangered and rare wildlife, and is a caretaker for a number of Civil War historic sites.
Sea Lion Landing is a replica of the famous San Francisco Pier 39 where hundreds of sea lions live. Its amphitheatre allows visitors to watch daily demonstrations from an upper deck area where you look down into the pool. Inside, visitors receive a giant overhead underwater viewing with comfortable seating. If you want to compare this Sea Lion Landing to Pier 39, view a live webcam of Pier 39 in real time.
This exhibit is the final phase of the zoo’s $36-million expansion and development project, Destination Riverbanks. Another new exhibit, Waterfall Junction, recently opened the first week of April, 2016. That is a three-acre interactive children’s garden that is a magical place with a giant waterfall, a splash pad, a dinosaur dig, a chance to look for bunnies in the rabbit holes, and ability to play in a playground built high up in tree houses.
These exhibits have FREE admission with paid general admission to the Zoo and Garden.
