Nonprofit Delivers Gifts to 2000+ Schools

Schools in South Carolina are getting Christmas early this year. This is due to the efforts of Charleston Hope, a local non-profit organization. It runs an adopt a class program in which all the children attending seven schools will get a gift that is newly wrapped for them. The program was founded by Emily Hoisington. She created the program six years ago while she was a high school student herself.

She was inspired to launch the program because of a situation in her own family. Her sister was an employee at a school with many low-income students. She was told that many students didn’t receive Christmas presents, and they couldn’t fulfill other basic needs in their homes. This made it difficult for the students to succeed in the classroom. Emily felt the need to make a difference.

The children get really excited each time Emily’s organization brings them presents. They have learned to depend on Charleston Hope. The majority of the volunteers are high school and college students. People from the local community also come out to help. Emily gets further inspiration from the memory of her boyfriend Chad Cooke. He passed away years ago, but before he did, he taught her the lesson that it is important to do things with your life that you believe have a purpose. It is also important to spend face to face time with the students. You can read more about Charleston Hope and contribute to the program here.

Lady Grey Jewelry Designers are clearly for Hillary Clinton

The campaigns for the United Stated presidential race has really heated up. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have engaged their full gear in their bid to succeed the outgoing president Barrack Obama. The supporters of the two parties have, also, not been left out. The latest notable actions being by the designers of Lady Grey jewelry line.

Basing on the information here, the designers have made a statement through their recent actions that indeed they are in for the idea of the next US president coming from the Democratic Party. On Tuesday, these artisans posted on Instagram that Ivanka Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump had purchased an item from their online store. The post included an image of a note, handwritten, which informed Ivanka that they had donated the proceeds from the purchase to Clinton Campaign, American Immigration Council and Everytown for Gun Safety.

The American Immigration Council, who benefited from the proceeds, had been one of the most vocal in opposing the Republican’s immigration stance, including his idea of building a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico. A month ago, they posted on their blogs stating that Trump’s policies on immigrations are not based on facts and are dangerous to the United States too.

Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, has pledged to introduce immigration reforms that are comprehensive within 100 days after she assumes office.

The Everytown for Gun Safety’s home page is currently wooing Americas to Shut Trump and the Dangerous Rhetoric of the NRA down. In June, they endorsed Hillary Clinton as their favorite candidate for the presidential seat.

At that time, Hillary Clinton issued a statement emphasizing how the parents and grandparents are dedicated to keeping their children safe. She stated that she felt honored to be endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. She expressed her gratitude for the effort put to ensure gun safety measure are in play and to end the gun violence that has been one of the epidemic issues in the United States. She went ahead and expressed her willingness to fight in order to bring the gun violence issue to an end once and for all. She clearly stated that the lives of all American children are equally precious and that they deserved a president who will always stand up for them.

Meanwhile, the Lady Grey designers have at least shown who exactly they back for the American presidential seat.

Among The Worst Drivers

A recent study has shown that drivers in South Carolina are among the worst in the nation. This comes as no surprise to those who have traveled on the roads in the state. With the relaxed seat belt regulations, the lack of a requirement for motorcyclists to wear a helmet and the myriad of places where drivers can cruise up and down the streets without worrying about driving at a high rate of speed, it’s no wonder that drivers aren’t the most agile on the road in the state. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration were used when creating the study that was used for the ranking.

Drivers aren’t very happy with the rest of the nation thinking that they don’t know how to drive on the roads. However, if there were fewer car accidents and fewer reports of motorists speeding, then the results might be a little different. If you’ve been on the roads, then you see that there are people on their phones talking and texting all day long. This isn’t the way that you’re supposed to drive. It’s also an indication that people really don’t care about what they’re focused on when it comes to being on the road. They care more about talking and getting their messages sent than they do obeying the traffic laws and regulations that are set forth by the state.

South Carolina Lawmaker Resigns After Accusations of Beating Wife

South Carolina Statehouse Rep. Chris Corley resigned on January 24 after being accused of aggravated domestic violence. He allegedly beat her bloody and could face up to 20 years in prison for this charge.

In response to the allegations, Corley issued a one-sentence resignation letter which reads, “I am grateful that the House did not have to take such extraordinary measures.” The statement was read by House Speaker Jay Lucas as he was reportedly preparing to submit legislation to expel Corley from the House. Corley saved him the trouble.

Corley is best known for his outspoken defense of the Confederate flag. He was re-elected to a second term in November with no opposition.

Initially, he was charged with first-degree domestic violence and pointing a firerm. The jury ended up returning a more serious charge, aggravated domestic violence, which is punishable by up to 20 years. The gun charge could land him an additional five years.

Corley’s statement said his wife tried to hit him after accusing him of cheating on her. He then responded. This all transpired on December 26 of last year, when Corley’s wife claimed he only stopped hitting her after seeing she was bleeding and hearing the screams of their young children. The attack allegedly ended with orley pointing a gun at his wife and then locking himself in a bathroom. His wife then reportedly fled to her mother’s house with the children.

The 911 recording did him no favors when it was released to the public. His children can be heard on the recording saying “Please stop…Just stop Daddy.”

Corley’s bail has been set at $50,000. He is also being barred from contacting his wife and children without permission.

Programs For Veterans In South Carolina Jails

There are several people in jail who are veterans. These are people who might not have a place to live and commit crimes in order to have a bed to sleep in and food to eat. Many prisons in South Carolina are now offering programs to help veterans who are in jail so that they can succeed when they get out. Veterans who have an honorable discharge can enter the program at the MacDougall Correctional Institution. About 10 percent of the inmates in the state are veterans. Prison officials want to make sure veterans have all of the support available to them so that they don’t end up back in jail.

Veterans have to be within two years of being released in order to get into the programs. Michael Cole will be in charge of the program. He is a retired commander of the Navy. This is a program that gives hope to veterans. There are many times when veterans might feel that they are pushed to the side after their services of protecting the country have ended. They don’t have access to healthcare, and they don’t get the support that they need in the way of housing and financial assistance. They are pushed under a rug, which is why many resort to doing what they can to get in jail so that they will have somewhere to live.

Haley Transitions From SC Governor to UN Ambassador

After serving as South Carolina Governor for six years, Nikki Haley became the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. She was nominated by President Donald Trump, and on Tuesday, January 24, Vice President Mike Pence swore her in as the ambassador. Trump had announced his intention to nominate her in November, after he won the presidential race.

She faced little opposition during her confirmation hearings. Only four out of the 100 senators voted against her nomination. That small group included Bernie Sanders and three democratic senators.

Before becoming governor, Haley was a state representative in South Carolina from 2005 to 2011. When encouraged to run by then governor Mark Sanford, she faced tough competition. Endorsements from Mitt Romney, the Sanfords, and Sarah Palin helped her leap to the top of the pack. She became the first Sikh elected as a governor in the US. Both of her parents are immigrants from India.

Haley graduated from Clemson University and received a BS in accounting. Earlier in her career, she worked for FCR Corporation and her mother’s business, Exotica International. FCR is a waste management and recycling company, and her family business is in the clothing industry.

Her critics have called attention to her limited global affairs experience. She was able to earn the votes of almost all of the senators, though, with her answers to their questions.

She supports Trump’s proposal to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. She does not support the idea of creating a Muslim registry in the US, and she believes that diplomacy will be needed to keep the Russians and Syrians in check. They can be useful allies in fighting ISIS, and she and her UN colleagues will have to keep a close eye on how they wield power.

Evacuations Possible In South Carolina Fire Rampage

With the wildfires burning in the North Carolina mountains, officials in South Carolina are starting to prepare for the possibility that the fires could spread to the state. Those who live to the south of the Pinnacle Mountain Fire or near the Table Rock Park should be prepared to evacuate with little notice. The Forestry Commission is recommending the evacuation so that firefighters can battle the fire with little interference from those who live in the area.

There are several churches that have opened their doors as shelters for those who need somewhere to go while the fire rages on in the area. There is no threat to homes at the time, but officials want to be on the safe side in the event that the fire line does inch closer. The fire at Table Rock Park now covers 1,400 acres. This is one of the largest fires in the state. The fire doubled in size in only a day, giving officials a cause for concern. Fire departments in the area have asked for donations of water bottles and food for those who are battling the fires as they don’t get long breaks while on the front lines. This is a way for communities to step up their efforts in letting the fire department know that they are protected and cared for so that they aren’t battling alone.

Charleston Harbor to Get Deeper:State and federal politicians joined with executives from major companies to celebrate a deal that promises to deepen Charleston Harbor. The legislation would deepen the harbor by 52 more feet to ensure the city can continue to host large container ships for years to come. State Senator Larry Grooms of the review and oversight committee for the state ports authority explained the deal came about due to the cutting of red tape. He added the idea came to him from a conversation he had with the administrator of the Panama Canal a decade ago, who told him if the U.S. did not streamline its regulations, it would kill the country. Grooms said that spurred him to break through the red tape in order to speed up the process. Executives from companies like BMW and Volvo said Charleston Harbor is critical to jobs. The president of Michelin North America said without the port in Charleston, his company would not be in South Carolina. One of the state’s U.S. Senators, Lindsey Graham, said one in eleven jobs in the state can be directly traced to the activity at Charleston Harbor. Your text to link… Jim Newsome, CEO for Charleston Harbor, said the work to deepen the harbor will cost $509 million. The state’s portion of that funding is ready to go, all that remains is the federal portion of the money. Newsome said he is hopeful that the deepening work can begin by the end of the year. According to Network Global Logistics, Charleston is the tenth busiest port in the United States of America.

Fires Across South Carolina Area

There are several wildfires that are raging in the mountains of North Carolina, but the people who live in South Carolina are getting some of the effects. They can see smoke in the air and smell smoke when they step out onto the porches of their homes. Many people have talked about the hazy conditions from the smoke making it difficult to see while driving.

With the dry conditions across the area, many fires have broken out. Some have been contained, but there have been about a dozen more that have started in only a day or two. A cold front swept through the area on Friday night, November 13, but it wasn’t really enough to make a difference in the severity of the larger fires. A state of emergency has been declared in 25 counties in North Carolina. There are firefighters from South Carolina who are scrambling to try to help put out the fires and to provide assistance to those who are being evacuated. A burning ban has been issued for many areas of South Carolina, especially in areas closest to where the fires are now burning. This means that no one can burn items outside, such as leaves or brush. Those who are caught burning items can be fined. Officials are also cautioning those who throw cigarettes out of the car while driving as this could be a concern as well for starting smaller fires.
