Asot Michael, a resident of Antigua & Barbados, works in the Parlament as a labor party member. He grew up in a political environment, so it was logical for him to enter into Barbados’ socio-political area. However, it was somewhat unusual for him to join the labor party, but he mentions that it is a part of his family’s political ideals, as his father was a member of this party. His entire family has been a part of the socio-political life of Antigua and Barbuda. However, they have always played a somewhat distant role and haven’t worked directly in the government. Asot Michael obtained his education from Barry University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics & Finance. After completing this double major, he sought a master’s degree in Business at the University of Miami.
Once his education was complete, Michaels joined the Antigua Labor Party and took on his family’s political concerns. However, in contrast to other family members, he took on a more active role and ran for a House of Representatives position. Gaining a position as a congressman for Antigua, Asot continues to fight for his principles. Unfortunately, many people criticize his ability to lead the party because of his upper white middle-class background despite his qualifications. Asot believes that his family genes are not upper-class white. As he says, “my heritage is Lebanese. My Grandparents were poor peasants from the mountains of Lebanon who emigrated to Barbados to find a better future. Their success came from honest business efforts.” He believes his unique perspective from this point can help Antigua. He is not one of the white upper-class citizens who inherited their culture and their ethics from slave owner citizens. His family’s success is based on good business practices and the ability to save and invest money, and not on the color of his skin.
