Kevin Plank was born and raised in Maryland. His father was a prominent land developer, while the mother was the Kensington mayor. While he was young, Kevin developed a passion for football, thus joining the Maplewood Maple Leafs. After high school, he joined the University of Maryland for his BA and MBA degrees, respectively. While in the university, Plank was very passionate about business and had launched several.
While playing football, Kevin was frustrated by the cotton t-shirts and decided to design them under the name of Under Armour. He started the business from his grandmother’s basement. He would send t-shirts to his friends and then ask them to pass them into all the locker rooms.
At around December 1996, the company managed to sell over 500 heat gear t-shirts, thus generating over $17,000 as revenue. In 1999, the company advertised in ESPN Magazine. That was the beginning of their journey to success. Most teams started ordering for their players. In 2010, the firm managed to cross the $1 billion mark. Later in November 2005, Under Armour went public.
Kevin Plank was committed to the firm’s growth, and in 2015, he acquired MyFitnessPall and Endomondo, which were the most favorite fitness apps. As a result of the tremendous growth, Kevin Plank has a team of over 11,000 employees. The company is currently located in Baltimore with a net worth of over $1.9 billion. Forbes released this report in 2019. Besides serving the prestigious role at Under Armour, Kevin also sits on various boards in the US, including the University of Maryland, Board of Trustees.
In his philanthropic activities, Kevin Plank made a pledge of $25 million to his alma mater, the University of Maryland, which would be used to construct an athletics and academic complex.
